Let's Celebrate: 2023 - 2024
Year 6, Term 4 - How busy have we been this term?
It has been a term packed with lots of learning and hard work both in daily lessons an in preparation for our SATs in May - our test scores are rising along with our confidence in our abilities.
Our Maths Week was based on shape, area, perimeter, volume and coordinates. Our task, to navigate a map of the school, record the coordinates of each clue/problem found and then we had to apply our shape knowledge, measure and solve each problem. We really enjoyed the practical aspect of the maths trail, measuring the size of the hall, perimeter of the playground and the area of the classroom carpets, to name a few of our challenges.
We have been focusing on improving our writing too using The Viewer by Shaun Tan to inspire our own mystery stories. From there, we then watched the Alma (Literacy Shed) film and wrote both a diary as Alma and a newspaper report about how she, and other children had gone missing. Next. we watched the Francis short film and wrote our own thriller stories. We even wrote letters as crayons based on the book, The Day the Crayons Quit – we practised our powers of persuasion here! Have a look at some of our writing.
In addition to all the writing we have had workshops from the Blue Cross on how to care for pets, as well as an Internet Safety workshop with our local PCSO, Kirsty. We have learnt about eathquakes and tsunamis in Geography, where and why they happen as well as how to earthquake-proof a building (see photos)! We were lucky to have a science workshop with Josh Milsom who taught us about aerodynamics.
During our science lessons we have learnt about evolution and inheritance – our inherited traits and adaptations to different environments. We also explored electrical circuits, how to change the brightness of a bulb and what difference the length of the wires in a circuit have.
What a busy term!
